Photographic series, ongoing since 2022
The series Plant Portraits by Berlin-based artist Catrin Wechler consists of individual photographic studies of blossoms and plant elements. The plants are staged against coloured backgrounds. Common species, typically found in flower shops or front gardens, are removed from their natural environment and presented in a new context.
The focus lies on the structural and formal qualities of the plants. Through the method of presentation, they at times take on animalistic or sculptural characteristics, while still retaining aspects of their botanical origin. The images shift between recognisability and abstraction. Each work is conceived as an individual portrait.
The titles follow the format Plant (Number), reflecting the chronological order of their creation. The series is open-ended and continues to evolve.

Catrin Wechler was born in Dresden and lives and works in Berlin. She studied Bookbinding at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (1988–89), Painting at Städelschule Frankfurt (1990–92), and Fine Arts at the School of Art and Design Kassel (1992–99). From 2004 to 2007, she completed her Master’s degree in Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts. Her work focuses on photography. Her artistic practice examines processes of transformation in nature and human life. A central theme is the metamorphosis of plants, documented through moments of distinct and subtle change.
