This exhibition presents a remarkable opportunity to explore the history of Sopot through the lens of a Tri-City artist.
Featuring mostly unpublished and unique photographs, the collection vividly captures Sopot in a state of TRANSFORMATION – a word that not only serves as this year’s festival theme but also perfectly encapsulates the essence of Węgrzyn’s work. With profound sensitivity, he had meticulously documented the city’s evolution over decades.
The earliest photographs transport us back to the vibrant 1960s and the legendary Sopot club, Non Stop. It was there, at the epicenter of big-beat fever, that Węgrzyn captured dancing crowds and the iconic band Red Guitars. Alongside these, visitors will find humorous shots of spa guests full of character and atmosphere, which evoke the unforgettable Polish film Cruise. There are also images from the Sopot Hippodrome – not of horses, but of a dog show.
The exhibition also features dynamic scenes of Sopot at the height of the season – bustling with life, bathed in sunlight, and radiating carefree joy. These contrast beautifully with nostalgic, picturesque views of the city in the off-season, echoing the mood and composition of works by the old masters.
