The word transformation is most often used as a synonym for change, less frequently as a reference to development, and only rarely as an indication of progress. In this sense, transformation is an expansive and multi-layered concept.
Reflections framed by these contexts systematically recur throughout photographic publications, which is why books with vastly different narratives can be drawn into dialogue. This exhibition seeks to spatially arrange those threads characteristic of the idea of transformation. Its purpose being to pose deeper questions.
The selected books serve as a starting point for reflection: does the force of transformation originate within, or is it imposed from outside? Does it entail the unconditional rejection of an existing order, or does it represent its creative reimagining? Is transformation always visible, or perceptible only to some?
The arrangement of books in the exhibition space may reinforce particular theses, or it may work instead to sublimate meaning. Is this about change, development, or perhaps progress? Applied to social, cultural, political, or purely artistic contexts, the term offers no guarantee of a definitive conclusion. Perhaps the transformations at stake are still unfolding, and the most valuable experience involves the opportunity to witness their consequences.
